Womens hair loss, while unusual, is always an important matter, especially when it happens to a young woman in high school. Debbie Magners was an A student on the cheerleading squad and the swim team. She had a tight, cut body that even the teachers admired, though we all only gossiped about it in hidden corners so that we couldn’t be sued or fired. Most impressive of all was her long mane of strawberry blond hair that fell to her shoulders and complimented her sea green eyes. The first sign of trouble came when she had cut her hair short. Then she cut it shorter and shorter before she was finally wearing a hat every single day. We all got called into a meeting where it was explained to all the faculty that Debbie was losing her hair and we had to watch out for her and not to treat her any differently. To Debbie’s credit, she never acted any differently, though we all noticed people staring at her, snickering or whispering off in some corner. She went off to college and I never knew what happened to her, though every year after her another bald girl came up through the school. By then, we all knew how to treat her.
