We had a little drawing later in the day. It was for a free glucose meter. Normally, some companies give out the meters, but as luck would have it, none of the people in our support group had gotten any free ones. So the group leader decided to hold a little contest. We had to each write down a fact about diabetes and place the slip of paper in a bowl. Later in the day she drew out a name. It was Mr. Callahan. He had already purchased a meter, so he gave it to me. I thanked him. I certainly wasn't expecting that. Then Mr. Callahan teased me about working out with him, and I said that I would like to, but am so out of shape that I couldn't. Not now. maybe in a few weeks I could try. Jim was laughing, even though he was in no better shape than me. Mr. Callahan was 95 years old and could run 8-minute miles one right after the other. His goal was to get off of his medication and to get back to a normal reading. He was well on his way, as his readings were on the average much lower than the others after a few weeks.
